Lionel Messi says he is unsure he will play ‘for much longer’ after death of father Jorge in emotional tribute – ‘I don’t know how to carry on’

Lionel Messi has paid an emotional tribute to his late father Jorge, who died aged 68 last week, saying he is “not sure I’ll carry on” playing football “for much longer.” The 39-year-old, who led Argentina to a runners-up finish at the 2026 World Cup last month, wrote: “I don’t know how to carry on.”

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without you,” Messi wrote on social media.
“I don’t know how to carry on. I used to just play football, and now I’m really not sure if I’ll carry on doing it for much longer.
“You were by my side from the beginning; there was so little left until the end. Why couldn’t you hold on just a little longer so we could finish it together?”
