New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani arrived at a press conference in Marble Hill amid a chaotic scene of protester chants following an incident where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a 28-year-old man during an enforcement operation.
Key Details of the Briefing
The Interventions: Mayor Mamdani announced to the crowd that he had spent the previous two hours on the phone with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin attempting to negotiate the release of the man shot by ICE. He stated that his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
The Protests: Demonstrators at the scene shouted down the mayor, chanting slogans labeling him “complicit” and shouting “f*** ICE”.
The Incident Context: The 28-year-old victim, identified as Oscar Belgal, was shot in the neck near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue. He was treated at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital before being taken into custody by unmarked ICE vehicles.
The Official Response: Speaking over the jeers, Mamdani strongly condemned the agency, stating that ICE is “rotten to its core” and calling for federal immigration enforcement actions to be banished from the city’s streets, schools, and hospitals. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that no local police officers were on scene during the initial shooting, though they did provide subsequent medical aid.
