They are literally like rats everywhere.

The belief among many of those who crossed into Ceuta is that if they can avoid being returned for seven days, they will have a pathway deeper into Spain and the rest of Europe. Whether that belief is accurate or not, it is clearly driving behaviour. Everywhere you look there are groups of young men hiding in the hills, sleeping in the forests, climbing the rocks and even sheltering in cemeteries, waiting and hoping to avoid detection long enough to move on.

The scale of what I witnessed was astonishing. This isn’t just a local issue for Ceuta. It’s a warning of the pressure Europe’s borders are facing and the consequences of policies that many believe are failing to deter illegal entry.
