Court affirms FCCPC’s authority to regulate airtime, data credit services.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission cannot issue licences to companies operating in the telecommunications sector.

The judgment, delivered Monday by Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, found that the FCCPC’s DEON lending regulations are valid but that licensing authority over telecom services belongs exclusively to the Nigerian Communications Commission.

The ruling comes months after the FCCPC approved five to operate as licensed airtime and data credit providers under its DEON framework.
